A little rain, snow, or thunderstorm is not going to hurt it. I’m saying from my experience that snow and rain don’t affect your air conditioner cosmetically that much. It’ll not rust as fast as you think and it’ll also not take any damage operationally.
Almost all the central air conditioner is made up of high-quality material. And they tend to last many years even if operated in harsh conditions.
Covered AC is A House For Little Animals
Most of the time our condenser unit is placed on the backyard side where there are trees and animals. So if you cover your air conditioner unit in winter. By covering, I mean packing the whole thing up.
Then my friend you should know that you’re building a paradise house for the animals. Since it is covered whatever animal will get in there will feel warm and they’ll try to build their nest there.

Another thing I would like to mention is that if you have icicles forming on the top of your roof. Then you should put some kind of cover on the top of your ac unit.
You can just put plywood or any other cover that’ll save your ac unit from icicles. I have been in a situation where a big icicle fell on the top of my air conditioner and the whole motor part was damaged.
So make sure you cover your ac unit’s upper part with some cover if you have icicle forming on the roof. I personally don’t cover my air conditioner unit but I do take precautions against the icicles. I just put a piece of hard plywood on the top of my ac unit. You can try it too.

So you have built a custom cover for your ac or bought it from somewhere. You have covered your ac properly but it still rusting why? So this happens because most of the time people get plastic covers for covering their ac units.
These plastic covers don’t allow air and water to pass hence the moisture keeps building inside the ac and it can rust your unit. Moisture can also cause damage to your condenser coil over time.
If you’re going to cover your unit nonetheless make sure you get a breathable material cover and it should not cover your whole unit.
Should you cover your RV air conditioner?
Most of the RV air conditioners are made up of premium-grade plastic material. As you know plastic doesn’t get rust or lose any of its property due to water or snow. So you should not cover your RV air conditioner.
If you decide to cover it then it can attract some insects or little animals and it can cause problems. You just need to make sure that you check your RV ac every now and then. Make sure it doesn’t get too plugged up or it doesn’t have any insect or other things.
